Philadelphia(1993):"The first mainstream Hollywood film to deal with the subject of AIDS and tell a powerful story of injustice."
Philadelphia asks the question of how we treat people who have sexually transmitted diseases, especially AIDS and especially when they're gay. Philadelphia contains some mature discussion of homosexuality and AIDS. Film is based on true events. It contains a good message and should definitely be watched. It was winner of 2 oscars: 1.Best Actor in a Leading Role Tom Hanks 2. Best Music, Original Song Bruce Springsteen It has very powerful message that we cannot push death aside and that we can learn from persons with AIDS to live in the moment. Tom Hanks stars as Andrew Beckett, a talented lawyer at the peak of his career. He has just been promoted to senior partner in his firm. Then when he is handling his important case at that time they suddenly fire him for incompetence. Beckett knows the real reason: they have found out that he has AIDS. After being rejected by nine other lawyers, Andrew convinces personal injury attorney Joe Miller, played by Denzel Washington, to take his case. Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington give blockbuster performances in this intense drama with a timely and compelling plot. The pacing and structure of the film are designed by director Jonathan Demme to treat the viewer as the jury. The arguments are taut and compelling. The film also succeeds in conveying the hornet's nest of ignorance, prejudice, half-truths, and devastating lies connected with AIDS. A Few Good Men(1992):"By this movie we can look at the military definitions of honor and loyalty."
"A Few Good Men" is a 1992 courtroom drama film Directed by Rob Reiner and starring Tom Cruise. Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin is based on Sorkin’s 1989 play of the same name. This movie is well known as one of the biggest court movies of all time. “You can’t handle the truth,” is still one of the best remembered lines in all of cinema history. When two US Marines are court-martialed for killing a fellow Marine, the young Navy lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) is assigned to the case. Young lawyer Kaffee defends Marines of murder when they were claiming they just followed an order of Jessup(Jack Nicholson). Jack Nicholson is on trial for murder and Tom Cruise takes him on in a military trial. I think this film really shows how good an actor Tom Cruise is, a brilliant performance and really holds his own against Jack Nicholson as Jessup. I love a good court room drama as well, this is one of those films I am shocked when people have not seen it. It also has that extra little point about honor and code and loyalty. One of Tom Cruise’s best performances ever in my opinion. For me, it was interesting seeing Cruise outside of an action role, and I certainly wish he did more of them because he’s excellent here. Jack Nicholson, however, is obviously the shining star of the film, despite his limited screen time. Every single actor in this film brought their best to the table. After watching the special features of the film, you really get a good idea that Reiner forged an effective relationship with his actors and offered some acting tips of his own for their performances. The star behind the scenes here is Aaron Sorkin, who wrote both the screenplay and the original play that it is based on. His dialogue is sharp, and his storytelling is strong, and the relationships between characters develop nicely and provide several nice moments throughout the film. Overall, I felt that "A Few Good Men" was a really masterfully directed, beautifully written, unforgettably performed coatroom drama that is sure to impress anyone. Pappu Can't Dance Saala(2010):"This film is a roller-coaster ride about the life of two individuals who have come to Mumbai, the city of dreams and luxury."
Survival’s a full-time job in Mumbai. 'Pappu Can't Dance Saala' is a simple film that captures the essence of Mumbai and the struggle of outsiders who come here 'to make it big in the city'. The story revolves around Vidyadhar Acharya (Vinay Pathak), who has just shifted from Benares to Mumbai and Mehak Malavde (Neha Dhupia), who is a chorus dancer and knows how to survive in the city of dreams. Mahek and Vidyadhar are neighbors and later due to unavoidable circumstances, they turn roommates. Pappu Can’t Dance Saala is all about how two people who can’t stand each other, manage to deal with the situation and how their journey begins to unfold in a rather interesting fashion. Vinay Pathak is known to play the common man to perfection. Neha Dhupia shocks you with her confidence. The chemistry between Neha and Vinay is pleasing in parts. Rajat Kapoor comes across as the mysterious dance teacher is convincing. It's great having Naseeruddin Shah in a film. He literally steals the thunder from the hero in the river bank scene where he reveals to his son in a powerful dialogue: 'It is destined that the banks of the river can never meet but when man decides they should meet, he builds a bridge,' only to make his son realize that if man has the will, he can find the way. The dialogues are good, witty and above average. The storyline, simple and straight from the heart. Saurabh Shukla has filmed sequences proficiently according to script. The music [Malhar] is functional. Fuwad Khan's cinematography is fair. Overall, the film is of mediocre production value with several cinematic liberties and is made with a sincere effort. It is worth a watch if you are looking to learn life's lessons, simply. Cheeni Kum-(2007)-"Emotions of love - whether you are 60 or 20, the heart reacts in the same manner!"
Cheeni Kum(sugar in little quantity) is a cool film with good humour. I would call it a mature romance between two very mature adults who know very well what they are getting into and why. It’s not a situation where boy and girl want to run and marry. A 64-year-old man, Buddhadev Gupta [Amitabh Bachchan] is the chef cum owner of London's top Indian restaurant. He lives with his 85-year-old mother [Zohra Sehgal] and his only friend and confidante is his 9-year-old neighbor -- Sexy [Swini Khara]. Buddhadev is a man with a singular passion in life -- cooking. A confirmed bachelor who has never been in love. Until Nina Varma (Tabu) walks into his restaurant and life. Nina is a beautiful, charming, Indian woman. Cool, calm, quiet, always smiling, but independent and strong willed. Two extremes, in age, character and attitude, meet and against all odds fall in love. They decide to get married. And, like any Indian man, Buddhadev respectfully comes to ask Nina's father, Omprakash Verma [Paresh Rawal], living in Delhi, for her hand. But there's just one problem… Nina's father is 58 years old, 6 years younger than Buddhadev, his would be son-in-law. Along with self-realizations and emotional sequences, they find out a solution to this extra-ordinary love story. The performances of Amitabh and Tabu are of the highest quality. Their on-screen chemistry is amazing and heart-conquering. They have proved that the director has chosen the perfect cast for his story. Paresh Rawal, child artist Swini Khera and all the supporting cast members have also delivered admirable performances. The movie also marks the return of music maestro Illaiyaraja, and he has done a tidy job. PC Sreeram’s Cinematography is impressive, and he has captured the locales of both London and Delhi beautifully. The dialogues of Cheeni Kum clearly take the cake and being the flavour of the movie. The director establishes his characters right up front, without wasting any time. Director shows a flair for light entertainers and the execution of certain sequences is commendable. The approach that the director uses is different, interesting and entertaining. It is an above average romantic comedy. On the whole, Cheeni Kum is an enjoyable dish. Hero-(2002)-"It helps to know the Chinese history, values, honor and how warriors may find their true destiny as lovers."
If you want to watch a martial arts movie with exciting action, there are hundreds of titles in the genre to choose from. If, on the other hand, you want to watch a martial arts movie that has both exciting action as well as an incredibly unforgettable story that I would definitely recommend is the 2002 film Hero, directed by Zhang Yimou. The movie centers on six principal characters. Jet Li plays a nameless warrior who is simply called Nameless. He enters the palace of the emperor of the state of Qin after defeating three different assassins: Broken Sword, Flying Snow and Sky. Also involved in the story is Sword's servant, a young girl named Moon. What happens for nearly the first half of the movie is that Nameless fights Sky and explains to the Qin emperor how he defeated Sword, Moon, and Snow. I'm not going to say what happens next. The reason: there is a good twist here, and it's best that I not spoil the surprise. Hero really is a beautifully made film. Zhang Yimou did an outstanding job directing this film in a way that captivates the audience every step of the way, not to mention also being involved in writing the brilliant screenplay. The same credit goes to the cast for their brilliant performances. Hero has won numerous awards and was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe. This movie works because of its great pace and fight scenes. But the main reason that makes it a great movie is its music. The music has a wonderful soul to it that takes to you to another world. One of the best i have ever heard. This movie is definitely a must watch. |
